Further your Learning
Rebecca H – Business Assistant at KR HR & Training Consultancy Ltd
Everyone has been through the education process during their life, but learning does not end with formal education, as we all can learn something new no matter where we are in life. Whether through a formal class, or online training, there is always opportunities available to better your knowledge. This September is “Have a Go” Month, where organisations and learning providers are encouraged to offer free learning activities for adults, such as taster sessions, online learning, talks or lectures, open days and more. So, in the spirit of “Have a go month”, we at KR HR and Training Consultancy thought it would be enlightening to share our own stories of bettering ourselves this year.
REBECCA H’S STORY
Over the course of the last year, I have spent a lot of time gaining new skills for both personal life and working life. I have gained many new qualifications as well as bettered by future career prospects using a mix of free online courses and funded training.
The first course I took this year was Psychological First Aid. It was a greatly relevant and interesting topic for me to learn about after lockdown, alongside feeding my interest in psychology. The course was great available at any time, and I could choose to learn at my own pace. This was a great introduction into further training to help me become better fit at my role. Open Learn available through the Open University has been an amazing resource this year. With a wide range of available free courses, I have been able to explore many areas that have interested me such as Recruitment and Selection or Developing my HR skills. The courses are easy to pick up whenever I have free time during my workday, along with supporting other learning I have completed through outside sources. The Open Learn site can be found here: Open University – Open Learn – Open University
I have not only been learning more career relevant skills, but other general but very necessary to know Skills such as Excel and Spreadsheets. I followed a course provided by Skills Ladder, who provided clear and easy to follow instruction to help better my spreadsheet skills. Not only did I learn a lot but there was plenty of support available from the instructor even outside of our scheduled sessions. Bonus: I also gained a certificate at the end!
KIRSTEEN’S STORY
When I enrolled onto the ILM Leadership and Management Course level 4, I hadn’t written assignments or been stretched by learning for over 25 years. I was filled with a small dose of self-doubt whilst also being thrilled at the thought of new and work-relevant learning. The module which stood out for me was “Developing Individual Mental Toughness”. We measured our own mental toughness and examined the implications of individual mental toughness for both ourselves and our organisations. I learnt how to handle stress more effectively both in the workplace and at home using relevant strategies and tactics. I thorough enjoyed the challenge of this course and felt an enormous sense of pride and achievement.
It’s never too late to challenge yourself to better your existing skills or learn something entirely new. Many resources exist online ranging over a myriad of topic, pricings and how they are delivered. There will be something out there to fit everyone, so challenge yourself for “Have a Go” month!
